All the commotion lately over the next generation of upcoming consoles has really had me thinking of why some people are such staunch defenders of one platform and such aggressive attackers of the other. The answer that seems most obvious is that these people are simply fanboys, but that made me wonder what really defines a fanboy and why they are what they are. The conclusion I’ve come to is not one that I mean to come off in a derogatory way, but really it’s more about the idea that it isn’t “dumb” or “funny” to be a fanboy, it’s actually sad. And it’s depressing that people live that way. The mentality required to think in the way that these people do is one of the worst side effects of modern culture. To think that way is to be thoughtless and soulless, and to allow the world around you define who you are with little to no input from yourself.
Fanboyism comes from the desire to affirm ones buying choices. These people have bought so completely into commercialism and what companies want to sell them that they have allowed themselves to become nothing more than corporate tools, quite literally. Their possessions are such a massive part of how they define who they are, that they are nothing more than the sum of all the things they own. And so, the possibility that perhaps there exists something better than what they purchased is not an attack on that company or that product, but a personal attack on themselves. When your identity is so tied up with your possessions, you can’t help but feel defensive of them.
There’s nothing wrong (well, not much wrong) with really liking or even loving a product, but the second you start having negative feelings for a product that has no impact on your life, you need to stop yourself. Take a deep breath and go outside. If you think of yourself as a Playstation fanboy the best thing in the world for you to do is to sell all your game systems and never buy another one. You went too far and you can’t control yourself. You need to walk away from these things that have taken way too much control of your life from you.
To anybody even remotely offended by this, I implore you to stop and think about why you would be. Why are you so willing to prostate yourself before a corporate entity that could not care less about you? Why are you so concerned that this might be a character flaw of yours? Please, be something more than what you own. And if you really cannot, you shouldn’t be proud of that fact.
